Anklesaria was honored during the 2022 Shipman Award ceremony at ISM World 2022, ISM's annual international supply management conference, taking place May 22-25 in Orlando, Florida. The award, created in 1931, is ISM's most esteemed honor and is presented annually to an individual who personally contributes to the advancements of purchasing and supply management while providing assistance and guidance to other professionals.
“Jimmy, like many Shipman Medalists, has profoundly influenced many generations of supply management leaders. Even while he advised some of the world’s most iconic companies, such as Hewlett-Packard and IBM, he has assiduously mentored and cultivated succeeding generations,” said ISM chief executive officer Tom Derry. “To cite only one but profound example, Jimmy was instrumental in establishing the R. Gene Richter Scholarship program, where, through the program itself and his participation as an executive mentor, he has contributed enormously to the development of the up-and-coming leaders of our profession.”
In Anklesaria’s 34-year career in procurement and supply chain, his passions gravitated to education and philanthropy. Since 1985, he has taught graduate, undergraduate, and executive courses in strategic cost management, finance, and investments at the University of San Diego (USD), where he was named Outstanding Professor of the Year in 1987. He has also lectured in strategic cost management at the Graduate School of Business of the University of Chicago, Michigan State University, University of Southern California, Arizona State University, and several others.
Anklesaria currently teaches a graduate course in supply chain cost management at the Rady School of Management, University of California, San Diego (UCSD) where he founded the Institute of Supply Excellence and Innovation and established the Jimmy Anklesaria Endowed Chair for Supply Chain Management. He also established the Anklesaria Family Supply Chain Innovation Endowed Fund at the Jacob’s School of Engineering and the Anklesaria Endowed Fellowship at the Rady School of Management at UCSD.
One of the world’s most sought-after speakers on cost management, Anklesaria has positively influenced the procurement transformation process at numerous Fortune 500 companies resulting in cost savings of several billions of dollars. He has a unique ability to provide practical solutions to complex business problems and has been the keynote speaker and workshop leader for numerous organizations and companies. Anklesaria is a mentor to chief procurement officers and emerging professionals alike in the field of supply chain management.
“I’m so humbled and honored to receive the Shipman Award and join 90 other awardees, many of whom I know and have worked with over the past three decades,” said Anklesaria. “I’ve learned so much from the supply chain community and hope to spend the rest of my career sharing experiences and ideas with the emerging leaders of our profession.”
Beyond his full-time professional endeavors, Anklesaria's passion for procurement leads to extensive volunteering to help develop the industry. This includes his support of young professionals as a founding member of the R. Gene Richter Scholarship since its inception in 2004, providing mentorship and monetary support for future supply chain leaders. It’s also evident in the contributions he makes to develop educational programs. For example, he built the supply chain curriculum at University of San Diego with friend and co-author, David N. Burt. He also helped launch an undergraduate minor in supply chain and a graduate certificate in supply chain management at UCSD.
Anklesaria is a fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and holds a law degree from University Law College, Bangalore and an MBA from University of San Diego. Anklesaria is the author of Supply Chain Cost Management: The AIM & DRIVE® Process for Achieving Extraordinary Results and is co-author of Zero-Base Pricing™: Achieving World-Class Competitiveness Through Reduced All-In-Cost with David N. Burt and Warren E. Norquist. Anklesaria holds the international service mark for the AIM & DRIVE® process. He has published several articles and cases in leading supply chain and financial journals and texts in the United States and abroad, including ISM’s Inside Supply Management® member magazine.
