Definition: The ISM Glossary of Key Supply Management Terms defines accessorial charges as costs that “carriers may charge in addition to the transportation cost. They include single shipment, inside delivery, notification, and storage and redelivery charges.” Accessorial charges can quickly pile up and cut into revenue and profitability — so much so that they were called “death by a thousand cuts” in testimony during a 2019 hearing of the U.S. Surface Transportation Board.
