Shipman Winner Steps Down from University Role

Jimmy Anklesaria, MBA, FCA, LL.B., founder of Del Mar, California-based Anklesaria Group, is retiring from his teaching position after 19 years at the University of California, San Diego’s (UCSD) Rady School of Management. His last class this semester will culminate a teaching career that began in 1985.

“I will continue to support and mentor my team at Anklesaria Group, as we transition from an education and consulting company to a managed service, artificial intelligence-driven cost solutions company,” Anklesaria says.

“I’m hoping to still conduct two- to four-hour master classes, be a guest or keynote speaker at universities, companies or associations, mentor young and not-so-young professionals, and try to contribute as much as I can to a profession that has been so kind to me over the past 40 years.”

Anklesaria is the 2022 recipient of the J. Shipman Gold Medal Award, presented by Institute for Supply Management®(ISM®) for career achievement. He is chair emeritus of the Institute for Supply Excellence and Innovation at the Jacobs School of Engineering at UCSD.

ISM Chapter Work Helped in Career Development

John Robinson, CPSM, C.P.M., CPPO, NIGP-CPP, CPPB, is director, purchasing services at University of North Carolina Wilmington. Being an ISM volunteer “inspired my learning, networking, professional growth and personal achievement, greatly benefitting my career,” he says.

Question: Why did you decide to volunteer with ISM?

Answer: As my career progressed and I was more immersed in leadership, it became more important to give back to colleagues and my profession. Volunteering with ISM at the local chapter and teaching certification programs have been ways to expand my knowledge and growth both through programs and the opportunity to meet fellow professionals.

Q: Has volunteering with ISM shaped your career path? If so, how?

A: When I started my career, the most recognized certification in the profession was the Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.). That’s when I was introduced to ISM and the Carolinas-Virginia chapter. They provided a great opportunity to grow my knowledge of procurement and supply management, as well as meet and network with other professionals. Many are not just colleagues but have become great friends.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering volunteering with ISM?
A: When you volunteer with ISM, you have the opportunity to meet some of the greatest minds in our profession along with emerging professionals that will be the next generation. If there is not a chapter in your area, recruit fellow professionals in your area and start one, or get involved with the main organization. ISM offers great opportunities to further develop your professional value proposition.
