Definition: In U.S. trade law, the de minimis exemption refers to the threshold below which imported goods are exempt from tariffs or import taxes. Under Section 321 of the Tariff Act of 1930, goods with a total value of US$200 or less per shipment were allowed to enter the U.S. without being subject to duties or taxes. In 2016, that amount was raised to $800. Despite that increase, the number of annual shipments entering the U.S. has skyrocketed.
