Definition: Once icebound for much of the year, the Northern Sea Route (NSR) that runs along the northern coast of Russia — connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Arctic Ocean — has become increasingly navigable due to the impacts of climate change and melting ice. And turbulence in the Red Sea has made the 3,500-mile NSR an increasingly attractive route, especially as a shorter passage between ports in Russia and China.
