Definition: This area of the Pacific Ocean in Southeast Asia is one of the world’s busiest maritime regions, with a significant portion of global trade passing through. The 1.4 million square miles of water is surrounded by several countries, including China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan. These countries have overlapping territorial claims; China’s assertion over most of the sea is not recognized by international law and has been the source of enduring geopolitical tensions.
