Definition: Representing members along the East Coast, Gulf Coast, Great Lakes, Puerto Rico and major U.S. rivers, the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) is one of the largest unions of maritime workers in North America. The ILA negotiates labor contracts, including the recent six-year deal with the United States Maritime Alliance. The ILA has about 85,000 members among 200 affiliates, according to its website.
